Do Hostas Require Sun Or Shade
The most important thing to remember is hosta are shade tolerant not shade dependent.
Do hostas require sun or shade. The more white a hosta has the more sun it needs to maintain vigor. Try it and see how plants fare. There are some that can handle direct sunlight as well. In the hottest zones even sun tolerant hostas will have a tough time withstanding more than a few hours of sun.
The thing to know about sun tolerant hostas is that while they withstand more sun than traditional shade loving hostas they do need protection from sun during the hottest part of the day. If you see signs of distress like brown leaf edges dull color or faded spots on leaves place plants where theyll receive shade during the hottest part of the day. If you think that hostas are only for shade you are only part right. In southern regions protect hostas for sun from the strongest sun of the dayafternoon sun.
In zone 6 and north hostas can tolerate more sun than in warmer zones. But shade might not be their ideal growing condition. Hostas are usually termed shade tolerant plants meaning they will grow in shade or partial shade. A lot of the yellowgold hosta have brighter colors in the sun.
Blue leaved plants do better in deeper shade since the blue color is from a waxy coating on the leaves. There are some that can handle direct sunlight as well. The further north you garden you might be able to get away with full sun all day.
